FC St. Pauli goes DIY (DIIY)

The textile industry is perhaps the best illustration of how globalization has been a dark force, where production has taken advantage of wildly low-paid labour and little to no environmental or social protections in some parts of the world, selling for top-Euro or Dollar in others. The FC St. Pauli has launched its initiative to produce its own team kit as a struggle to counter that, after ending its controversial partnership with a company that could not.

Researching for over 2 years, the Club expressed confidence in achieving its goals to source kit manufacturing that “that produces performance wear sustainably and transparently and supports fair trade” (all quotes from the link below, the official FCSP site).

Club president Oke Göttlich writes: “The strength of a member-run club is reflected in the implementation of our members' ideas. In this way, we can face any crisis together. DIIY, incidentally, is derived from the term DIY, or do it yourself. That's exactly what FC St. Pauli is all about - not just moaning, but doing it better yourself."

Today’s announcement seems to be met well with supporters - many of us laughing at the quip about “moaning” - although none of the English speaking fans quite get with the extra i is doing in DIIY. Must be a brand thing and we will have to ask Bernd von Geldern, head of sales for the club.
